4 Reasons to Choose a Deck-Mounted Skylight Over Curb-Mounted

Posted on

Adding a skylight to your home is a great way to bring in more natural light and provide beautiful views of the sky above without impacting your own privacy. However, there are different types of skylights available, so you'll want to spend some time looking at all the options to ensure you pick out the best one to fit your property.

One of the most important decisions you'll need to make is between deck-mounted and curb-mounted skylights. Essentially, a deck-mounted skylight sits flush with the roof while a curb-mounted skylight sits higher than the roof on a raised frame. Both have their own benefits and drawbacks, but here are just four signs you should go for a deck-mounted skylight.

1. You Want a Cleaner Look

Probably the most compelling benefit of deck-mounted skylights is their cleaner appearance. Since they sit flush with the roof, they appear like a far more natural part of your property and are perfect for creating a clean modern look. Curb-mounted skylights often look bulkier and fit less naturally with the rest of the property, especially in newer homes.

2. You're Concerned About Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency should be a key concern when making any home improvements. After all, energy efficiency impacts everything from comfort to utility bills to the health of the planet itself. Curb-mounted skylights simply aren't as efficient as deck-mounted ones since the frame itself is generally not insulated very well. Since deck-mounted skylights sit closer to the roof, they offer great energy efficiency.

3. Your Roof is Steeply Sloped

One of the main reasons people started switching from curb-mounted skylights to deck-mounted skylights is that the latter can work with a wider range of pitches while the former can't be used with higher-pitched roofs. Even if the roof you're currently considering for a skylight isn't too steep for a curb-mounted skylight, consider other parts of your property – you won't be able to match skylight designs if you go for curb-mounted for one part only to find other parts of the property's roof are sloped more steeply.

4. You Want a Custom Skylight

Some people want customized skylights that fit perfectly around their own needs and wants – for example, you may want a larger-than-average skylight. Unfortunately, curb-mounted skylights don't offer much design flexibility thanks to the wooden frame that needs to hold them. Even where customization options do exist, the frame can negatively impact how the skylight looks. In contrast, a deck-mounted skylight is much easier to customize since it doesn't use a frame.
